It's not hard to imagine that the final OG Apes flick was advertised as, "see John Huston in an ape mask." I've never read the original book, or seen the 70's animated series. Maybe I'll work on plugging those holes in my ape repetoir, Gavin.
I’d forgotten about the cartoon. There’s also a live action series! I think it lasted half a season, and left no impression on my memory, other than it’s existing. But I was young, so that may not be indicative of anything.
The only truly great Planet of the Apes movie, probably unintentionally, was the incredible BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES. I remember seeing it in the theater as a kid, and I'd never seen anything that amazingly, outrageously great before! Sure, it had shoddy production values and truly weird dialog, but that only made it better to me. It was supposed to prevent any further sequels, and ended up spawning endless prequels instead. I saw it again recently, and it still holds up for me. It's just the best ever! I haven't seen the recent ones, but BATTLE FOR THE PLANET OF THE APES is streaming now, so I'll check it out.
Lois, BENEATH is definitely in the top 2 of the original Apes flicks. I love your enthusiasm for it! We all have movies that maybe aren't critical darlings that we still love anyway. I feel the same way about Robert Altman's Popeye. I'll go to my grave insisting it's a great flick!
Every single Apes movie is streaming on Hulu right now if you want to mainline them the way I've been doing. Thanks for the comment, great to hear from you!
Okay, well OBVIOUSLY Popeye is a great movie. It did fall apart at the end, but everything else... ? Brilliant! Mainlining the Apes movies has great appeal for me.
I don’t think that I got past the third one of the originals. John Heuston did one? Wow. Must check that out.
The Tim one finishes with a nice nod to the book. The book is very good, in the vein of Gulliver’s Travels.
